1969 Pontiac GTO "The Judge"

Here come de Judge! 6,725 hardtops and 108 convertibles
were produced in the debut year of the special GTO model “The Judge”

From John Gunnell’s book “75 Years of Pontiac Oakland“:

“On December 19, 1968 Pontiac announced the forthcoming appearance of a “one-step further” high performance option called the GTO “Judge”.  A 366-hp Ram Air III 400 c.i. engine was standard, with a 370 hp RA IV engine available as an option.”

“Several factors directly influenced automotive marketing sprung up late in 1969 and had a negative affect on Pontiac Motor Division’s destiny. Insurance companies suddenly adopted a tough stance on writing policies for high-performance cars, claiming they had higher accident loss rates. In January, 1970, the U.S. Transportation Secretary would announce that he was seeking to curtail “muscle car” advertising. For PMD, such sentiments proved immediately disastrous. The division’s success of the 1960’s was based largely on the Pontiac performance image, which was now being virtually outlawed.”

The Grand Prix was redesigned, “styling highlights included a V-shaped grille; square-bezeled dual headlamps and the longest hood in the history of the industry. An aircraft-styled cockpit was featured. The full-sized Pontiacs got a beauty treatment this year. Styling was highlighted by split bumpers, new rooflines and ventless windows.”

Total production for 1969 was 870,528 vehicles. During the 1960s, Pontiac was a popular choice for professional vehicle conversions (Amblewagon shown below).
