From John Gunnell’s book “75 Years of Pontiac Oakland”:

“For 1952, stylewise, there was little external change over 1951. Redesigned spear moldings, modifications to radiator grilles and a revised truck handle were the chief appearance refinements. According to Ward’s Automotive Yearbook, 1952 was the year of DeLuxe automobiles and over 80 percent of all U.S. sales went to models with richer appointments.”

“In a Motor Trend test drive the magazine’s research staff drove a high-powered Pontiac equipped with Hydra-Matic and covered the quarter-mile in just over 21 seconds. The recorded a top speed of 95.24 miles per hour and an average traffic fuel consumption rate of 16.4 miles per gallon. The testers found that all data varied greatly with the way the dual-range gear-shifting was accomplished and they liked the fact that the Pontiac gearbox offered drivers a choice of economy and performance.

  1. I have a 1952 pontiac chieftain with the original straight 8 3 speed manual, i inherited the car from my father when he passed away in 08′. The car is presently in pretty rough shape but I fully intend on restoring it piece by piece as it is the only way i can afford to do it. I just wanted to say thank you for at least giving this car a tiny bit of recognition. It deserves so much more than it gets.

    1952 was the first year for the hydra-matic transmission to be improved from a single range to a dual range transmission, and 1952 was the first year that pontiac offered a electric power antenna. most people are not aware that the korean conflict is why the 1949-1950 pontiac body styles were held over and reused for 1951-1952 models, original plans were for the 1953 pontiacs models to be 1951’s, and the 1954 pontiacs to be 1952’s. charles coker.
